Hi! I've read a lot of Hispanic literature that has a strong political element. If you're new to my writing, you should know that's not me before you buy one of my books. My family came to the United States over three generations ago to work; we didn't march and carry banners. Grandpa would have never allowed that. I like to say that when we came north we kept our rosaries, our tortillas, and our sense of humor. My first three books, my Turtle Trilogy, were written in honor of a warm, close family that wasn't afraid to work hard and never forgot to laugh.

You may have noticed the little Mexican icons here and there on my site. They're a part of a growing collection. I have other little people too. So far, my collection comes from Mexico, Japan, China, and Russia. It isn't a collection that's growing very fast, as I'm very particular about what I collect. The pieces, each and every one, are near and dear to my heart. The little people look down on my laptop and remind me of all of the people here on our beautiful planet. Their struggles. Their hopes. Their laughter.

I've had complaints about the author photos on all of my sites. I know there's a problem--they look just like me. I'm working on it. One of these days the postman will come to my door when I have my camera out. Don't laugh. I have the world's best postman. Day after day, he schlepps books to my doorstep without ever complaining.

I was born and raised in Oklahoma, and attended school in Lawton for almost twelve years. I now live in Washington State with my husband, a corporate bankruptcy specialist. I think I write because it gives me an excuse to explore my interests in marine biology, anthropology, and archaeology...I can read all I want and call it work!

You can order my books directly from the publisher or other bookstores, including Amazon. There are links at the tops of all my sample chapter pages. My newest book, Custer and His Naked Ladies, has a link right on the homepage.

Read my books, and write to me!   Please put something in the subject line so I'll know you're not spam! I know I missed some emails when I changed addresses. If you wrote to me and I didn't answer, I never got it...

¿Ḍnde Estàn Tus Cuentos?”

(Where Are Your Stories?)

 Janelle Meraz Hooper

I heard stories on my grandmother’s knee

Stories of coming to a new country,

Stories of courage, living, and strife.

I listened to stories at my mother’s feet

Stories of leaving home

Stories of lust and men and being a wife.

I listened to stories by my father’s bed

Stories of growing up in Texas

Stories of homesteads, ranches, and war.

I listened to stories in my neighbor’s swing

Stories of childhood and getting by

Stories of success and failure, and more.

I listened to stories from an old man

Stories of the West, and Indians

Stories of cowboys, and skies of blue.

I listened to them all and remember all

Stories that fill my head and

Now I share them with you.

“Ḍnde estàn tus cuentos?”

Share them with me and I will listen

Until the stars come out―
